Damageplan

Damageplan was a groove metal band founded in 2003 in Dallas, Texas and dissolved since 2004 after the murder of Dimebag Darrell, largely influenced by metal, thrash and other parts. melodicas post-grunge, adding to this the style of another band, Panther, because 2 of its former members were those who formed Damageplan next to the singer Patrick Lachman, and bassist Bob Zilla. The Abbott brothers (Vinnie Paul and Darrell Lance), began this project in 2004, after the breakup of Pantera, because Phil Anselmo was dedicated to his side projects Superjoint Ritual and Down (the latter alongside his former partner in Panther Rex Brown).

Damageplan is released with its debut album New Found Power (2004), which contains quality in terms of lyrics and a very particular metal style, from the riffs of Dimebag Darrell through the imposing sound of Bob Zilla’s bass and the impressive demolishing sound with double bass drum already characteristic of Vinnie Paul’s drums, without leaving aside the voice of Lachman, which, though, does not offer such an underground style (compared to the Phil Anselmo), gives in return a more melodic sound and a brusque and aggressive tone when required. All the above can be heard on topics such as: Pride, Save me (first single), Reborn and Breathing new life; that make this album an original material, with a powerful and aggressive sound; retaking the style that the Abbott brothers had previously maintained.

It is worth mentioning that the band began to take an important popularity, (although many still carried the shadow of Pantera), this was demonstrated during the presentations they made for the promotion of their album. Everything seemed to be going well for this promising band, until it arrived on December 8, 2004, the date commemorating the 24th anniversary of the assassination of John Lennon. Damageplan was presented at the nightclub “Alrosa Villa” in Columbus, Ohio, but nobody knew that Rock would be hit again that night by another tragedy equal to that of the Ex-Beatle in 1980. The concert was not even half minute of having started, and that was when the sailor Nathan Gale snuck into the establishment where the event was taking place, climbing a 3 meter metal mesh. Even being surprised and subsequently persecuted for the safety of the place, the man armed with a Beretta 9mm pistol managed to enter the left side of the stage, and then, he emptied five bullets on the humanity of Dimebag Darrell killing him instantly, while shouting at him ( according to witnesses) several curses blaming him for the separation of Pantera, and also his brother Vinnie, whom Gale also planned to assassinate that night, but fortunately he could not, thanks to the quick reaction of security personnel and other Damageplan collaborators. At the same time, the killer had also killed three other people and wounded two others, and finally took John Brooks (Damageplan’s battery technician) hostage, who tried to knock Gale down without success when he was changing the provider of the weapon. The emergency services had already been notified, Officer James D. Niggemeyer was the first to arrive at the scene, and entered prepared pointing his 12-gauge shotgun to meet the horrific scene. Seeing that the assassin had no intention of surrendering, and that he was determined to kill the next one who tried to stop him, agent Niggemeyer had no choice but to shoot him in the back of the head, putting an end to the brutal massacre. This fact, undoubtedly, not only mourned the Rock in general, but also raised great controversy regarding the uncontrolled carrying of weapons that are in the United States, because in that country, even the deranged people like Gale can very easily acquire a gun, without the law, or their mental condition prevents them.

At the funeral of the guitarist, personalities from the Heavy Metal world attended: Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath); Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley (Kiss), Dave Mustaine (Megadeth), Edward Van Halen (Van Halen), Zakk Wylde (Ozzy and Black Label Society), Rob Zombie (White Zombie), Ozzy Osbourne, John Dette (former Slayer) , Rex Brown (Down and ex-bass player of Pantera) and naturally his brother Vinnie, who gave an emotional speech that culminated with the phrase:

“REST IN PEACE, BROTHER DIME!”.

Dimebag Darrell was buried in Arlington (Texas) on December 14, 2004, in a coffin belonging to the merchandising of Kiss, Darrell’s favorite band and also his greatest influence on music during his youth, to the point of carrying a tattoo of his on one shoulder. The legendary Dimebag was buried with a Charvel EVH guitar belonging to Edward Van Halen (Van Halen), which was used in the recording of the 1979 Van Halen II disc.
