Clara_Schumann’s Biography

With Johannes Brahms (1833-1897), another great composer of the 19th century, he cultivated a deep artistic and intellectual relationship that would eventually acquire amorous overtones and that lasted until death.

Clara Schumann was admired by other personalities of the time such as Goethe, who met her at a very young age, at the time when she alternated children’s games with her musical training, and also met personally with Felix Mendelssohn, Frederic Chopin and Niccolò Paganini. In addition to being a pianist, she wrote her own music and edited several works by her husband.

He did not compose much but the works that are conserved of it have great merit. His compositions were for: solo piano, songs for voice and piano, chamber music, orchestra and choral music a capella of great beauty. The reasons why she did not dedicate herself more to the composition were several, among them her concert career, her eight children, her devotion to her husband and the role of women in the 19th century. Clara Schumann had a privileged musical formation, which together with her musical understanding and ability allowed her to approach the composition. However, he wrote in his diary:

Once I thought I had creative talent, but I have given up on this idea; a woman should not wish to compose. None have been able to do it, so why could I expect it?

He had a great spiritual strength that allowed him to endure a hard life as an artist and full of tragedies in the personal sphere, such as the separation of his parents, the premature death of several of his children and the attempted suicide and subsequent death from her husband. But he also had some insecurities. She doubted her talent as a composer, she did not consider herself beautiful, and even as a pianist, after listening to Franz Liszt, she thought that, although she played better than the pianists of the time, she had nothing to do with the Hungarian virtuoso.

Although she was not exactly a feminist woman; however, she was an outstanding woman in many ways. At that time it was common to find “prodigy girls” who played very good works of great difficulty and conquered the music-loving public. The majority of these young women, when they reached a certain age, left the concert and went home, teaching or other musical activities, away from the stage. Unlike these women, Clara Schumann’s career continued at the highest professional levels until a few years before her death. He made about forty concert tours throughout the European continent and was received with the highest honors everywhere. She was a professional in the economic sense too: she was worthy, just like the other virtuosos of the time, since she was for a long time the only support of the family.
