Charles Wepner , known as Chuck Wepner, (February 26, 1939, Bayonne, New Jersey) is a former US boxer, and as a pugilist his record is almost unknown, but he had the opportunity of facing the famous boxing champion Muhammad Ali, in a fight in 1975 that inspired the main character of the popular 1976 film “Rocky”.
Chuck Wepner’s Biography
Wepner is of Jewish descent and his youth was spent in Atlantic City. The nickname, “The Bleeder of Bayonne” (The Bayonne Bleeder in English), was granted to him in memory of his native city and by the fragility of his eyebrows that used to bleed in amount in each combat, arriving to add 329 stitches.
From 1964 to 1978, Wepner accumulated 35 victories (17 of them by K.O.), 14 defeats and two draws. He was defeated by the greatest boxers of his time: George Foreman, Sonny Liston, Joe Bugner and Duane Bobick. All his defeats were by K.O. or K.O. technical, being in 1973 almost on the verge of retirement, with 37 years of age already completed and without having won any title. Like the fictional character, at the time of his most famous fight Wepner made his living giving box fights in amateur clubs against low quality rivals. However, his most legendary defeat would lead him to fame.
