Beaumont College, at seven years of age, debuted on stage in a production represented in Dublin of A Midsummer Night's Dream. At age 16, Hewett joined the Royal Air Force, leaving it in 1940. Hewett subsequently entered the Oxford Repertory Company, debuting at the theater circuit of the London West End in 1943. \n He later performed at the Broadway circuit working on the musicals My Fair Lady, The Unsinkable Molly, Music Is, and Kean, in addition to the play Sleuth, among other pieces, and directed in 1960 on Broadway magazine From A to Z and the musical by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart, performed in 1967 Off Broadway By Jupiter. Hewett also directed other plays, including The Marriage-Go-Round and Beyond the Fringe and Camelot. \n Hewett made his film debut with the 1951 criminal drama Pool of London, later working for television on Robert Montgomery Presents and DuPont Show of the Month. Among his film performances is to review his role of effeminate theatrical director Roger DeBris in Mel Brooks 1968 comedy The Producers. In 1976 Hewett played bureaucrat Federov on the sitcom Ivan the Terrible. Between 1983 and 1984 it was Lawrence, the character buddy of Mr. Roarke played by Ricardo Montalb\u00e1n in the final season of the ABC series La Isla de la Fantas\u00eda. \n The following year Hewett began what would be his best-known role, that of Lynn Aloysius Belvedere, an English butler who worked in a middle-class American family on the sitcom Mr. Belvedere. After finalizing the series in 1990, Hewett acted like guest in an episode of the production of the NBC California Dreams. His last work before the cameras was in 1997, a cameo on the FOX Ned & amp; Stacey. \n A lifelong Catholic and bachelor, Hewett was a deacon at the Church of St. Victor in West Hollywood.
