Christine_Keeler’s Biography

Keeler was born in Uxbridge (county of Middlesex). She was raised in Buckinghamshire, village of Wraysbury, by her mother and stepfather in a house made by two converted train carriages.

At 15, thanks to her exotic good looks she worked as a model in a clothing store in London’s Soho. She was abused and mistreated in her early teens by her stepfather, and she lost her virginity at 15 with a student from Ghana who she met in London. At 17 she became pregnant with a Londoner and lost her modeling job. He tried to abort with a knitting needle. The boy, Peter, was born premature and died a week later in the hospital.

In the summer of 1959 he left Wraysbury and spent some time with friends in Slough and later moved to London.

She worked as a waitress at a Baker Street restaurant where she met Maureen O’Connor, who had worked at Murray’s Cabaret Club in Soho. Maureen introduced Keeler to the owner, Percy Murray, who hired her as a cabaret and escort, (topless showgirl). She met Stephen Ward and they went to live together as if they were a couple, although she affirmed that it was a brotherly relationship, as of brothers.

I was used to men liking me but there was always a subtext which involved me getting my clothes off. The difference with Stephen was that I wanted to sleep with other people. Powerful people.

I was used to men loving me but there was always something subliminal that implied that I took off my clothes. The difference with Stephen was that he wanted me to sleep with other people. Powerful people.

For a while he went to live in a flat that was put by real estate owner Peter Rachman. Every afternoon I went to the floor to have intimate relations with Keeler in a routine way, without romance.

Christine left Rachman for Serge, a Polish who worked as an assistant to Rachman.

Her friend Mandy Rice-Davies, became Rachman’s mistress and occupied the same floor.

The Profumo case

John Dennis Profumo was born in 1915 into an aristocratic family. He was educated at Harrow’s elite private school and the University of Oxford, and in 1940 he was the youngest legislator in the House of Commons. He lost his seat after the Second World War, in which he reached the rank of Brigadier, returned to Parliament in 1950 representing Stratford-upon-Avon, and in 1960 was named Secretary of State for War and one of his goals was to promote recruitment after the abolition of compulsory military service. He married movie star Valerie Hobson. In 1961 John Profumo was 48 years old and Christine Keeler 19.

Stephen Ward rented a cottage from Lord Astor in Cliveden (Buckinghamshire), where on a July afternoon in 1961 Christine was swimming naked in the pool. Lord Astor and John Profumo passed by at that moment and saw it causing a fatal attraction for the latter.

Profumo started a relationship with Keeler without realizing that she was also sleeping with the drug dealer Johnny Edgecombe and the Russian spy Yevgeni Ivanov, who worked as a military attache at the Soviet embassy

Keeler’s relationship with Profumo was cut by the Cabinet Secretary, Norman Brook, after receiving a report from Roger Hollis, director of the MI5 intelligence service.

On August 9, 1961 Profumo wrote to Keeler informing him that he could not continue seeing her.

In March 1963 John Profumo appeared in Parliament and denied any impropriety whatever with Christine Keeler. Three months later he was forced to resign when details of the relationship came to light and Profumo admitted to lying to Parliament.

Ward committed suicide on the last day of his trial in which he was accused of living on money from immoral activities.

The portrait

In the middle of the case Profumo Keeler posed in 1963 for a photographic portrait by Lewis Morley that became famous.

The photo shoot on the first floor of the Peter Cook Establishment Club was to promote the film The Keeler Affair, which was shown only outside the UK.

Keeler had signed a contract in which she had to pose naked for the advertising photos, but she was reluctant to undress. The producers of the film insisted and Morley persuaded Keeler to sit astride a wooden chair, so technically she was naked, but the back of the chair covered most of her body.

Then Morley and Keeler were already famous, but the photograph made Arne Jacobsen’s model 3107 chair famous. The chair used in the portrait was an imitation with a hole in the backrest to be able to reach in and carry it. Portrait chair is in the Victoria and Albert Museum.

The photograph appears on the cover of the single album Telling stories (1997), by The Charlatans.
