Dame Christabel Harriette Pankhurst , Order of the British Empire September 22, 1880-13 February 1958), was a suffragist and political activist born in Manchester, England. She was co-founder of the Social Union and Women’s Politics and led militant actions from exile in France from 1912 to 1913. In 1914 she was an opponent of Germany in the war. After the war he moved to the United States, where he worked as an evangelist for the Second Adventist Movement.

Christabel Pankhurst’s Biography

First years

Christabel Pankhurst was the daughter of the well-known English suffragist Emmeline Pankhurst and her husband the radical socialist Richard Pankhurst. She was sister of Sylvia Pankhurst and Adela Pankhurst. His father was a lawyer and his mother owned a small shop. Christabel was helping her mother, who worked in the registry of deaths and births in the city of Manchester. Despite the economic difficulties, her family always supported her to achieve her goals, her mother died in 1928, leaving a great impact on Christabel.

Activism

In 1905 Christabel Pankhurst interrupted a meeting of the Liberal Party demanding the right of women to vote. She was arrested along with her fellow suffragist Annie Kenney. However, his arrest gained media interest, and his mother Emmeline began to encourage more suffragism in the wake of her daughter’s imprisonment.

After obtaining a degree in law in 1906, Christabel moved to the headquarters of the Social Union and Women’s Politics in London, where she adopted the pseudonym “Queen of the Mob”. She was arrested again in 1907 and in 1909. Between 1913 and 1914 she lived in Paris, France. She returned to England in 1914 fleeing World War I, and was arrested there again. Pankhurst started a hunger strike, paying only 30 days of a 3-year sentence. Upon leaving prison he wrote the book The Great Scourge and How to End It. In the following years he continued to work tirelessly for women’s rights, making significant progress.

He left England in 1921, and moved to the United States where he served as an evangelist. He returned to the United Kingdom where he was included in the Order of the British Empire in 1936. With the advent of the Second World War, Christabel returned to North America, to live in Los Angeles, California.

Death

Christabel died on February 13, 1958, at the age of 77. Her landlord found her body lifeless, and for no apparent reason of death. She was buried in Santa Monica, California.
