Since childhood, this son of a policeman expressed his admiration for the Egyptian music of Umm Kalthum or the reggae of Bob Marley. Learn singing, accordion and playing a homemade guitar (which at that time the children made with a can of oil for cars and bicycle brake cables) and debuted according to tradition playing at circumcision parties and weddings. With fourteen years, Cheb Khaled learned on his own to play the real guitar, the bass, the accordion and the harmonica. At the age of 16 (1976) he left school and recorded his first album: “Trigue Lissi (The way to the institute), where he made an apology for playing truant, he was one of the first to record on tape and returned to the cabarets on the coast. Khaled becomes a star in Algeria without having ever gone on the radio or by the television programs where the young singers (alhane wa chabab) or by any music conservatory compete, his rai themes were about women and alcohol, In the following years, Cheb Khaled earned his living performing at weddings and cabarets, and in the early 1980s he met producer Rachid Baba Ahmed who introduced him to the electronic sounds of Western music.

Towards the second half of the eighties Islamic fundamentalism in Algeria increased and the raï singers, due to their liberalism, were in grave danger and received threats against themselves and their families. Rachid Baba Ahmed was killed along with other raï artists.

In 1985, the raï comes out of hiding thanks to a liberalization of the regime that tries to recover the raï and organizes the first Festival de Raï de Oran. It is the first public concert of Cheb Khaled. He settles in France from 1989 and records Kutche, his first album in which he evolves into jazz and pop.

In 1996 Khaled stopped using “Cheb” (young man in Arabic) in his stage name. In 1989, already settled in Paris, Kutche recorded in collaboration with the keyboardist Safy Boutella. Kutche was his first album in the western world. In 1991 Khaled published his second album and the first solo album in France, with the same title. The first single, Didi, produced in Los Angeles by Don Was, is among the fifty best sellers in France. In 1993 he released his third album, N’ssi N’ssi, which will be the soundtrack of the feature film Un, deux, trois, soleil by Bertrand Blier. This album fuses rock, funk and Egyptian music. With this album his fame in Europe increased. In 1994 he released two albums: Hada Raikoum and Young Khaled who did not succeed. [Citation & required]

In 1996, he recorded the album Sahra together with Jean-Jacques Goldman. The first single of the disc was Aïcha. Other songs like Sahra or wahran Marseille also reaped success. In 1999 he participated in Paris in the largest concert of Arab music of France, [appointment required] the 1,2,3, soleils name that was due to be three artists: Khaled, Faudel and Rachid Taha. [Citation required] 2000 published 6 albums, the first of them, Hafla, picked up a concert, Monstres sacres du raï was a studio record, Aicha, which was a live album; and Kenza was recorded all over the world and contained funk, pop, reggae and Arabic music. In this album, he covers the popular song Imagine by John Lennon. The theme Allech Taadi appears in the soundtrack of the feature film The Fifth Element by Luc Besson. The song “Didi” appears on the soundtrack of the film Caro Diario (1993) by Italian director Nanni Moreti. The fifth disc contained the concert 1,2,3 soleils recorded in 1999. And finally the sixth album released in 2000 was Elle ne peut pas vivre sans lui !. In 2001 he published another 3 albums, El lil wa nour, Salem Maghreb and Ya Taleb. The latter contained songs from the time he called himself Cheb Khaled and lived in Algeria. In 2004 he published Ya-Rayi. On October 16, 2003, Khaled was named Goodwill Ambassador of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).
