Chava Alberstein , in Hebrew חוה אלברשטיין (Szczecin, Poland, December 8, 1947), is a well-known singer, songwriter, lyricist, musical arranger and Israeli actress . She is one of the most outstanding Israeli singers, with a career that has spanned more than forty years, although her most characteristic style is Yiddish folklore, she has made inroads into many other musical genres.

He was born in the city of Szczecin, in the north of Poland, but he emigrated to Israel with his family at the age of four, and spent his childhood and youth in Kiryat Chaim, and in 1964, when he was seventeen years old, his acting in a nightclub in Jaffa opened the doors to him to sign his first recording contract, with CBS.When he was called up by the Israeli Defense Forces, he dedicated himself to entertain the troops with his musical performances, which was decisive for its launch to stardom.

Beginning in the 1980s, he started writing his own songs. His album Mehagrim (“Immigrants”) is composed mainly of themes of his own authorship. He publicly questioned the Israeli government’s policy during the First Intifada, and a version of the traditional Passover song, “Jad Gadya”, included in the album “London” (1989), was temporarily banned from being broadcast on official Israeli radio stations. Although a posteriori the General Prosecutor Yosef Harish declared that the prohibition was “an unjustifiable violation of the freedom of expression”, it is rarely disseminated since then. The theme was used in the musical band of the movie Free Zone (2005) directed by Amos Gitai.

He has recorded more than 60 albums, many of which have been gold or platinum records. Six of them have received the Kinor David award (Harp of David). She is one of the most famous Israeli singers in Yiddish, although she has also sung in Hebrew, English and Arabic.

As an actress, she took part in the film Intimate Story. She is married to filmmaker Nadav Levitan, who in 1995 made a documentary about Alberstein, titled Too Early to Be Quiet, Too Late to Sing, and is also the author of the lyrics of his album “End of the Holiday”. Chava Alberstein is the author of the music of two of her husband’s films, Stalin’s Children and Groupie.
