Chandler was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne (England). He began his career as a bassist in a trio with Alan Price. With the incorporation of Eric Burdon (vocals), John Steel (drums) and Hilton Valentine (guitar), in 1964 the group called The Animals was formed, which became one of the most successful and influential ensembles of Great Britain in the decade of the 60s. Among his successes we can highlight “Do not Let Me Be Misunderstood” and “Baby Let Me Take You Home” (1964) and, evidently, “House of the rising sun” (1964), without a doubt, a of the songs that are already part of the history of rock. They are also known for their bass lines and the introduction in the riffs of “We Gotta Get Out of This Place” and “It’s My Life”. On the last American tour of The Animals (July 1966), Chandler hears Jimi Hendrix playing with his band Jimmy James and the Blue Flames at the café “Wha!” of Greenwich Village. An important element to give a twist to the life of Jimi Hendrix and that of Chasler himself.
After the separation of the group in 1967, Chas Chandler became a manager and music producer. Without a doubt, his first and great discovery for music was to be a producer of Jimi Hendrix. After their first encounter in New York, both traveled to England where Chandler was the great defender of the great guitarist in Great Britain. The now producer went looking for companions to Hendrix to find Mitch Mitchell and Noel Redding, future drummers and bassist respectively of The Jimi Hendrix Experience and produced the first two albums of the band “Are You Experienced?” (May 1967) and “Axis: Bold as Love” (December 1967). But the quarrels within the band and the abuses of alcohol and prohibited substances of Hendrix, cause Chandler to dissociate himself from the band in November 1968.
From then on, Chandler continued to produce other bands, most notably that of the popular English rock group Slade for 12 years (from 1969 to 1981). During that time Chandler also bought the IBC Studios and released the label Barn Records.
