Charles Sanders Peirce (pronounced / pɜrs / purse in English) (Cambridge, Massachusetts, September 10, 1839 – Milford, Pennsylvania, April 19, 1914) was a philosopher, logical and American scientist. He is considered the founder of pragmatism and the father of modern semiotics or theory of signs, together with Ferdinand de Saussure.
Son of Sarah and Benjamin Peirce, he was professor of astronomy and mathematics at Harvard University. Although he graduated in chemistry from Harvard University, he never managed to have a permanent academic position because of his difficult personality (perhaps manic-depressive), and the scandal surrounding his second marriage after divorcing his first wife, Melusina Fay. . He developed his professional career as a scientist in the United States Coast Survey (1859-1891), working especially in astronomy, geodesy and pendular measurements. From 1879 to 1884 he was a professor of part-time logic at Johns Hopkins University. After retiring in 1887, he settled with his second wife, Juliette Froissy, in Milford, Pennsylvania, where he died of cancer after 26 years of intense and prolific writing. He had no children.
For Spanish-speakers, it is surprising that since 1890 Peirce added a “Santiago” to his name and used with some frequency for his signature that of “Charles Santiago Sanders Peirce”. A detailed explanation can be found here (in English).
