Drake was born under the name of Charles Ruppert in New York. He graduated from Nichols College and later worked as a salesman. In 1939 he began his career as an actor, signing a Warner Brothers contract. It did not reach success immediately. World War II interrupted his career; After completing military service Drake returned to Hollywood in 1945, but his contract with Warner Brothers ended. During the 1940s he did some work independently, such as the film A Night in Casablanca.
In 1949 he signed with Universal Studios and in 1954 he performed in Music and Tears. In 1955, Drake devoted himself to television, participating in Robert Montgomery Presents, and three years later he became the host of the Rendezvous program. In 1959 he starred in the western No Name on the Bullet, where he played a doctor who must save a village from a murderer. In 1967, he participated in a chapter of the series The Fugitive, called The One That Go Away in the role of Oliver Greer.
He participated in 83 films between 1939 and 1975, including Scream, Pretty Peggy. More than 50 were dramas, but also acted in comedies, science fiction, horror and film noir.
He died on September 10, 1994 in East Lyme (Connecticut), at 76 years of age.
