Charles_Coles’s Biography

Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and son of George and Isabel Coles, he was also known by the name of Honi Coles. Coles developed his fast rhythm as a tap dancer in the streets of his hometown. Later he worked in the city of New York as part of the group Three Millers, known for their difficult and elaborate dance steps, which played on small platforms. After his time in that group, he became headliner at the Apollo Theater.

In 1940, while dancing with Cab Calloway’s band, he met Cholly Atkins, with whom he formed the artistic duo Coles & amp; Atkins. Both played a number with a song of fast music and tap dance, which followed a swing dance and a soft shoe (zapateo without rigid shoes). Both continued their collaboration over nineteen years.

Coles took the tap to the world of concerts when he acted in the production that the Joffrey Ballet made of the piece by Agnes De Mille Conversations about the Dance.

His debut on the Broadway circuit took place with the work Gentlemen Prefer Blondes in 1949. Other productions he worked for were Bubbling Brown Sugar and My One and Only, for which he received a Tony Award and a Drama Desk Award.

In the 1980s, Coles taught dance and history at the Universities of Yale, Cornell, Duke, and George Washington.

Coles was a close collaborator of Brenda Bufalino, an artist of great importance to help him rebuild his career in the early 1970s. In his last years, his performance in the 1987 film hit Dirty Dancing was notable. < / p>
