César Francisco Gerónimo Zorrilla (born March 11, 1948 in El Seibo) is a former domimnican center fielder who played in the Major League Baseball. Geronimo was a member of the famous Red Great Red Machinery of Cincinnati in the 1970s.
In 1967, Gerónimo was signed by the New York Yankees, who tried unsuccessfully to make him a pitcher. Two years later he made his major league debut with the Houston Astros. After the 1971 season, he went to the Cincinnati Reds in a blockbuster, along with eight other players, among which was Joe Morgan. Winner of four consecutive Golden Gloves 1974-77, Gerónimo was the center fielder in five divisional series and in the 1975 and 1976 World Series with the Cincinnati team, in the previous series, he caught Carl Yastrzemski’s ball to make the out final. He played the last three seasons of his career (1981-83) with the Kansas City Royals.
In his fifteen seasons, he hit .258, with 51 homers and 392 RBIs, 460 runs scored, 977 hits, 161 doubles, 50 triples, and 82 stolen bases. He also held the “honor” of being the victim of number 3,000 punch Bob Gibson and Nolan Ryan, respectively. “I was in the right place at the right time,” Geronimo joked about it.
His nickname was “El Jefe”, referring to his surname. Gerónimo had one of the best arms in the majors. Once after catching a fly to the wall of the center field, he threw the ball to keep a runner in third base, the ball came to fly over the head of receiver Johnny Bench.
After retiring, he worked for the Japanese team Hiroshima Carp, as a coach at his Dominican baseball academy.
In July 2008 he was inducted into the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame.
