For Carter Beauford, it all started when he was three years old. His father was going to a Buddy Rich concert, but he could not find a babysitter for young Carter. His only solution was to take Carter with him. From that moment, Carter’s eyes and ears focused on Buddy Rich, who captivated and fascinated him.
After the concert, the young Carter learned to play drums. After hearing his son play, Carter’s father was impressed and bought him a Rogers drum.
During his early years, Carter’s main influences were Tony Williams, Papa Jo Jones, and of course, Buddy Rich.
Throughout his career, Carter has played with different bands, playing different musical styles. Carter believes that it is important to have an open mind and to be musically exposed to different forms of music.
In addition to the Dave Matthews Band, Carter prides himself on playing in a band called Secrets. This band played in the area of Richmond, Virginia and was composed of several talented musicians, including Carter, who played drums. After Secrets disbanded, Carter went to California to do a casting for the Arsenio Hall show. Carter failed to get a place in the show, so he returned to Virginia.
