His first guitar studies were conducted with Ricardo Rodríguez Cruz and Domingo Alvarenga of the Municipal Conservatory of Tacuarembó and in Montevideo with Hugo Mondada and Cedar Vigletti. Later he devoted himself totally to popular music from his quality as a singer and composer.

Washington Benavídes, Carlos Benavídes, Eduardo Darnauchans, Eduardo Larbanois, Eduardo Lagos, José Carlos Seoane, J. Salgueiro and Pablo Benavídez, several of whom were part of the Uruguayan cultural movement called “Grupo de Tacuarembó.”

With his first professional musical incursions in the early 1970s, he joined the so-called “Grupo de Tacuarembó”, which brought together a generation of artists from different genres, such as musicians, poets and writers, among whom they found Washington Benavides, Numa Moraes, Eduardo Darnauchans, Eduardo Larbanois, Carlos da Silveira, Eduardo Lago, Julio Mora, Enrique Rodriguez Viera, Víctor Cunha, Eduardo Milán and Tomás de Mattos, among others.

In 1973 and also in 1974 he won prizes at the Durazno Folk Festival. That same year he received the First Prize at the Singing Contest of Paysandú and recorded his first full-length, entitled Soy del campo. On the occasion of presenting this album, Alfredo Zitarrosa wrote:

Carlos Benavides belongs to the well-known Grupo de Tacuarembó , led by our beloved oriental poet Washington Benavides and who to date has launched to fame interpreters and creators of genuine peasant style, unmistakable for his style as Numa Moraes and Eduardo Darnauchans.

Also in the Durazno Festival, he received the “Charrúa de Oro” in 1981. Another award received was the «Palenque de Oro» at the Festival de Tala en Canelones.

Along with his uncle Washington Benavides is the co-author of many songs, among which are counted as a jasmine country and old guitar. With him he edited the album “Benavides y Benavides” in 1983, as well as several collective albums, such as “Amigos” and “Las milongas”. He has also participated as guitarist of Carlos María Fossatti, Los locals and Julio Mora, among others.

With nine songs, it is with Numa Moraes the musician who was recorded by Alfredo Zitarrosa. Among other interpreters of its themes you can also find Santiago Chalar, Carlos Maria Fossati, Grupo Vocal Universe, Sanampay, Soledad Pastorutti, Julio Mora, Omar Romano, Numa Moraes, Larbanois – Carrero, Yamandú Palacios, Nacha Roldán, Carlos Garbarino, Washington Carrasco, Víctor M. Pedemonte, Pablo Estramín, Los del Yerbal and Eduardo Darnauchans.

He has given recitals in several countries around the world, including Germany, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Cuba and Russia.
