Karl Benz was born with the name Karl Friederich Michael Vaillant on November 25, 1844 in Mühlburg the now municipality of Karlsruhe, Baden-Württemberg, which is part of modern Germany. His parents were Josephine Vaillant and a locomotive driver named Johann George Benz. According to German law, Karl acquired the name “Benz” from the legal marriage of his parents Benz and Vaillant. When he was two years old, his father died of pneumonia, changed his name to Karl Friedrich Benz in honor of his deceased father.

In 1871 he founded his first company to sell building materials. The following year he married Bertha Ringer, with whom he had five children: Richard Benz, Clara Benz, Ellen Benz, Thilde Benz and Eugen Benz

In 1883 he began to build industrial engines in Mannheim. He installed a single-cylinder, 958 cc & 0.75 cv water-cooled on a tricycle that drove through the city in 1885. In 1885 Karl Benz and his partner Thomas Hardessen rebuilt the model.

On January 29, 1886 Karl Benz applied for patent No. 37,435 to the German government for a three-wheeled vehicle, which is considered the first automotive internal combustion vehicle in history. The Benz Patent-Motorwagen, as it was called, is on display today at the Deutsches Museum in Munich. In 1890 he was joined by two partners: Friedrich von Fischer, who was in charge of the administration, and Julius Ganss, responsible for sales. Thus, Benz had his hands free to devote himself to the development of the technical part of automobiles, which favored the rapid progression in this field.

The first Benz four-wheeled vehicle was manufactured in 1893, the Benz Victoria, and the following year the Benz Velo, which was the base model of the first trucks of 1895.

Production in 1899 was 572 vehicles, and Benz became one of the most important car manufacturers. That year the first racing car appeared, which was the source of many successes.

In 1910, Benz founded the Süddeutsche Automobil-Fabrik de Gaggenau. In 1924, Benz and Daimler begin the merger process that will end in 1926, forming the company Daimler-Benz.
