Brian Keith ( Robert Alba Keith : Bayonne, New Jersey, November 14, 1921 – Malibu, California, June 24, 1997) was a American theater, film and television actor.
Brian Keith’s Biography
First years and military service
His parents were the actors Robert Keith and Helena Shipman, this last actress, a native of Aberdeen (Washington), who made his debut as an actor in the silent film Pied Piper Malone (1924), aged three. Between 1927 and 1929, Keith’s stepmother was Peg Entwistle, an actress who became famous for committing suicide by jumping from the “H” of the Hollywood Sign (the famous giant letters with the name of Hollywood). After studying at the high school in East Rockaway, New York, he joined the United States Marine Corps (1942-1945), and served during World War II as an air gunner, receiving an Air Medal.
After the war, Keith became a theatrical actor, later devoting himself to the cinema and, later, to television. Strong and capable actor, Keith spent many years playing second roles and ardent types, as in Yuma with Rod Steiger and Sara Montiel.
He gained fame for his starring role in the Sam Peckinpah series The Westerner (1960). His great opportunity and the jump to fame came, however, in 1966 when he played “Uncle Bill” Davis in the popular television series My Adorable Nephews, a role in which he won three Emmy nominations for best actor.
At that time, for his role in the series, had to reject the role of Deke Thornton in the film Wild group, directed by Sam Peckinpah, which led to a dispute between the director and actor, friends until then.
He is also fondly remembered for his role as father of twins in the 1961 film The Parent Trap (You to Boston andto California), along with Hayley Mills and Maureen O’Hara. He played Anás the priest in the concept album of Jesus Christ Superstar in 1970. His performance of Theodore Roosevelt in The Wind and the Lion (1975) was also highly applauded, and is considered one of the best characterizations in a president’s cinema from United States. Keith also played President William McKinley.
Keith continued to star in series such as The Brian Keith Show, Heartland, and Hardcastle and McCormick. He also acted in the production of six chapters The Zoo Gang, about a group of former World War II fighters, played by Sir John Mills, Lilli Palmer, and Barry Morse.
Keith spoke Russian, which is why he was chosen to play Russian characters twice: as Premier Soviet, with Rock Hudson; and as a Soviet scientist in Meteor, with Natalie Wood. In The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming, interestingly the opposite occurs, as his character receives translation from the Russian character played by Alan Arkin.
In his latest film, Rough Riders (1997), Keith played President William McKinley. Its director, John Milius, dedicated the film to “Brian Keith, Actor, Marine, Storyteller.”
On June 26, 2008, the Hollywood Walk of Fame installed a star in his honor at 7021 Hollywood Boulevard.
Keith got married three times. The first with Frances Helm. Then, in 1955, with Judith Landon and, finally, in 1970, with the Hawaiian actress Victoria Young, who later acted in The Brian Keith Show (1972-1974). Keith had four children but also adopted another three with Judith Landon. One of her daughters, Daisy Keith, was an actress and acted with her father in the series Heartland in 1989.
In his last years, Keith was affected by emphysema and lung cancer. He was buried in the Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery in Los Angeles, California.
