Brian Joe Lobley Berry (February 16, 1934) is a human geographer, currently Professor Lloyd Viel Berkner of the University of Texas at Dallas. His urban and regional studies in the sixties initiated the scientific revolution of geography that made him the most cited geographer in over 25 years.
Berry was born in Sedgley, Staffordshire, United Kingdom. He studied at the Queen Elizabeth Institute and at the Acton County Grammar School in Middlesex. He graduated from University College London with a B.Sc. in Economics in 1955 and went on to do a postgraduate degree at the University of Washington, where he obtained a M.A. in 1956 and a PhD in 1958 under the supervision of the famous geographer and pioneer of the “quantitative revolution” William Garrison.
After obtaining his doctorate, Berry was appointed professor at the University of Chicago, where he became director of the Center for Urban Studies. He held his position until 1976, developing research on the geography of urban areas and regions and standing out in the geographical revolution that Garrison had preceded. He was the most cited geographer during the following two decades, standing out for his study of long-term dynamics and their relationship with macrohistorical phases of economic and political development.
From 1976 to 1981 Berry was a professor at Harvard’s Laboratory for Computer Graphics and Spatial Analysis, after which he was appointed dean of Heinz College at Carnegie Mellon University for five years. In 1986 he joined the University of Texas at Dallas as founding dean of the School of Economic, Political and Governmental Sciences, where he has remained since.
Berry was elected a member of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States in 1975 and of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1976. He is also a member of the British Academy and University College London. In 1988 he won the Victoria Medal of the Royal Geographical Society. In 1999 he was appointed a member of the Board of the National Academy of Sciences and in 2004 he was a founding member of the Texas Academy of Medicine, Engineering and Science. In 2005 he was named Laureat Internationale de Geographie ‘Vautrin Lud’ (considered the Nobel laureate of geography) and a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners.
