Bret Easton Ellis’s Biography
Son of Robert Martin Ellis and Dale Ellis, grows up in a middle class family in San Fernando Valley. He studied at the Buckley School, after which he passed to Bennington College, in the homonymous city of Vermont. In the latter is inspired the fictional liberal arts school Candem College in the novel The laws of attraction. At this stage, in the 80s, he was a keyboardist for several music groups before his first book was rejected by the publisher for being too crude and violent. Then he wrote his first novel, Less than Cero (Less than Zero), published still as a student in 1985 and that made him a millionaire at 21 years of age. In it, Ellis recounted the holidays of the son of Hollywood magnates and their friends who run between luxury cars, drugs and debauchery.
Two years later, he published The Laws of Attraction (The Rules of Attraction), which, although it did not have the same success as the previous book, confirmed him as standard writer of Generation X when dealing with choral form and all details of the lives of several young students in a liberal art school, following an unusual literary technique: the mixture of the individual vision of each protagonist in the form of a diary. The novel was later taken to the cinema with the title of The rules of the game.
His greatest literary success came in 1991, with the publication of American Psycho, his most controversial book, criticized, reviled and praised at the same time. In it he narrates with all kinds of details (including the most violent and scabrous) the double life of the yuppie Patrick Bateman, impeccable executive and at the same time a serial killer on a whim and even boredom. Many dismissed the novel as “dangerously misogynistic”. However, after the filming of a film based on the book – directed by Mary Harron and starring Christian Bale – it has become a cult piece. From this moment, Ellis has been branded as “nihilist”, “misogynist” or “enfant terrible”, without seeming to diminish his already established career as a fashion author.
His personal life has been affected by continuous intrusions, especially due to the social nature of the writer, usual in all kinds of parties and entertainment activities of the American yuppie class. Special controversy produced his sexual condition: Ellis was considered bisexual, although in 2005 he broke his silence on his preferences, by confessing for The New York Times a six-year relationship with his best friend and lover Michael Kaplan, who died in 2004. Ellis himself said that “his death was the catalyst to end Lunar Park.”
After American Psycho he has published Los confidentes (1994), Glamourama (1998), Lunar Park (2005) and Imperial Suites (2010), the latter continuation of his first novel, Less than zero, 25 years later.
