Brandon Routh’s Biography

First years

Routh, the third of four children, was born in Des Moines, Iowa, the son of Katie, a teacher, and Ron Routh, a carpenter. Routh’s sister, Sara Routh, is a singer. Brandon is half Indian and English. Routh grew up in Norwalk, Iowa, which was located approximately 100 miles south of Woolstock, the birth town of George Reeves, the second actor to play Superman. Routh was also a fan of Superman comics and movies.

Routh attended the University of Iowa for a year, aspiring to be a writer. Routh said he was told he was very similar to Christopher Reeve, who had previously played Superman. His former manager enrolled him because of the similarity, assuring that he thought Routh would be chosen to play Superman if there was another film in the series.

Early career

In 1999, Routh left the University and moved to New York and later to Los Angeles, where he pursued a full-time acting career, first appearing as an extra in Christina Aguilera’s music video, What a Girl Wants. His first regular role was in the short television series of ABC in 1999, Odd Man Out. In 2000, he played a role in the third season of the MTV television series, Undressed. Routh subsequently appeared on Gillmore Girls, and appeared regularly on One Life to Live, playing Seth Anderson, from May 23, 2001 until April 17, 2002.

Routh then appeared in Cold Case, Will & amp; Grace and Oliver Beene. During this time, he worked as a waiter at a popular Hollywood location, Lucky Strike Lanes, and shared an apartment with his sister.

Role of Superman

Warner Bros. started looking for an actor to relaunch the Superman franchise. Many actors were considered, including Nicolas Cage (who at one point had signed up for the role) and Tom Welling, star of Smallville. When Bryan Singer was elected director, he insisted that an unknown actor be chosen in the role, in the tradition of choosing the best-known Superman of all, Christopher Reeve.

Routh auditioned for the role and was discovered by Singer after seeing Routh’s videotaped audition. Singer and Routh met on August 13, 2003, and Singer decided to choose him for the role, although he did not tell Routh until two months later. Routh’s election was announced in October 2004, making Routh an “instant celebrity.” The filming of Superman Returns began in Australia in February 2005. The film premiered in the United States on June 28, 2006.

Routh has commented that he feared that his performance would resemble that of Christopher Reeve. Routh says he hopes his performance “reminds people of Christopher Reeve as they watch a new Superman.” Routh’s criticisms are generally positive, with Newsweek saying that he “easily becomes famous with the legendary role.” However, film critic Roger Ebert thinks that “Routh lacks charisma like Superman, andsuppose like Clark Kent is not supposed to have it.” Routh signed on to appear in two potential sequels to the film, but due to mediocre box office results it never happened.

At the 2006 Spike TV awards ceremony, Routh won the “Best Superhero” award, as Superman in Superman Returns, surpassing, among others, “Hugh Jackman” as “Wolverine.”

In August 2008, Warner Bros. officially announced that it intended to restart the Superman franchise. Routh still wanted to repeat the role, according to DC Comics president ‘Paul Levitz’. In 2009, however, Routh’s contract to play the role of Superman in another film expired, but he says he would like to return if he had the chance. However, the British actor ‘Henry Cavill’ was chosen to play Superman in the restart of the series, Man of Steel

Personal life

Routh has been dating actress Courtney Ford. The two met when Routh worked as a waiter. Routh and Ford have lived in Los Angeles since 2006, both appeared in the short film Denial, which was screened at the Las Vegas film festival, and both are married since 2007. In 2012, Routh announced that he would be the father of a son named Leo James. He has met actor Kal Penn, a co-star in Superman Returns, for several years during his time in Los Angeles.

Routh’s sister, Sara, has a song titled “You’re Never Gone” on Sound of Superman, the companion album on the film’s soundtrack.

Routh is also a fan of the World of Warcraft video game.
