Brandon Charles Boyd Wiseman (born February 15, 1976 in Van Nuys, California) is an American musician, writer and artist, best known as the leader and vocalist of the American band of alternative rock Incubus.

Brandon Boyd’s Biography

First years (1976-1991)

From a very young age, Brandon’s parents, Dolly and Charles, tried to nurture their son’s creativity based on the great experience they had in the world of entertainment. During the 1980s, he met Brandon Miranda while they were in primary school.

Afterwards (in 2nd year of high school) Jose Pasillas becomes friends with Ludo de Guani Fernandeh (who spent most of his free time playing guitar in his room) the duo finally finds Alex Katunich (Dirk Lance) which felt bad since he had been thrown out of a musical group that played jazz. The trio decided that they would play together. At first they only played songs by Megadeth, Metallica and Nirvana in which José was not very interested, but he played anyway. These covers made them play at some parties, and all three became the entertainment of the neighborhood.

Throughout the years, Brandon’s lyrics have expressed different ideas and maturity. His first works, light and playful, were undoubtedly influenced by his use of marijuana. According to Brandon, after smoking his first joint with his older brother Darren, the poetic locks opened inside his brain and from that moment he was faithful to the grass and considers that all the success of incubus is due to marijuana.

Brandon continues to draw and before the band was fully dedicated to music, he and Jose enrolled as art students at Moorpark College.

Incubus (1991-present)

A couple of months later they decided to form a band, and they stopped playing covers, to write their own songs. The voice of Brandon, who only took two singing lessons before running out of money but who according to him learned everything he could need, became an essential element of the band. As they created more songs, the group became popular in the neighborhood. In Incubus apart from his role as vocalist in several songs, he performs the role of rhythmic guitarist and has also been seen playing percussion both in the studio and in the band’s shows.

When the group decided to make their first performance at a friend’s house, it was time to choose a name. Brandon’s suggestion, Spiral Staircase ‘was rejected in favor of Mike’s, randomly selected from a dictionary: Incubus which calls a demon that feeds on sexual energy by means of virgin girls. The band thought the word was good, if not, at least, the definition. Brandon took advantage of his artistic gifts and drew the pamphlets announcing his upcoming performances. At first, Brandon copied some drawings from a sex education book that Mike’s mother had left them, but decided to stop using them since some fans were a bit confused.

His powerful voice was what most attracted the record label Epic /Immortal Records, and the band signed a contract in 1996. A style between alternative rock and funk define this Californian band that recorded their first album, Fungus Amongus in 1997.

The first two releases of the group within the seal went unnoticed, but the following ones reaped a great commercial success (S.C.I.E.N.C.E, Make Yourself and Morning View). Then went on sale his fifth album, A Crow Left of the Murder, which continued with the successful career of the band; in November 2006 his penultimate studio album was released, called “Light Grenades”; in 2009 the double album Monuments and Melodies was published, with some songs cataloged as B-Side; and the seventh and last album, so far, If Not Now, When ?, saw the light on July 12, 2011, with softer tunes, more romantic lyrics, and a great reception from fans.
