Bradley James Nowell (February 22, 1968 – May 25, 1996) was an American musician, singer and guitarist for the reggae-punk band Sublime. At 28, shortly before the release of the band’s third album (debut in a multinational Sublime), Nowell died as a result of an overdose of heroin.

Bradley Nowell’s Biography

Bradley was born on February 22, 1968 in Long Beach, California. He was born with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) and he was prescribed Ritalin. His mother, Nancy Nowell-Watilo, was music and his father, Jim Nowell, was a folklore artist. His sister was called Kellie. He was very intelligent and was a good student getting good grades at school. The year 1978 to the 10 years his parents divorced, marked an important stage of his life. He lived with his mother for 4 years in Orange County, but later, in 1981, he went to live with his father and stepmother.

At the age of 11 he had the opportunity to travel to the roots of Reggae such as joseth pineapple, Virginias Islands, where he discovered his musical roots, which are demonstrated in his work as a musician. At age 12 he had his first guitar and started playing. Bradley could spend hours playing and singing with his family. He had the great ability to play songs on guitars with having heard them only once. He grew up listening to Punk Rock and British Ska, one of his favorite bands was Circle Jerks. At age 13 he formed his first band called Hogans Heroes. In 1986, at the age of 18, Brad graduated from Wilson High School in Long Beach, California. After attending the University of California, Santa Cruz where he lasted only one semester for his passion for music.

At an early age he began to use marijuana. Years later, in 1993, prior to the release of the second album Robbin ‘the Hood, Bradley began to consume heroin, frustrated by the refusal of the big record companies. Brad knew very well about the harms of heroin use, where he expressed his fear in the song “Pool Shark” (“Take it away butwant more and more / One day I’m going to lose the war”). Then he continued with the consumption to not lose the inspiration for his musical creation.

In 1994 Brad met Troy Den Dekker with whom he started dating for months and in September of the same year, Troy became pregnant. With this event, Bradley wanted to clean up his drug past and start a new life for his partner and son. For the birth of James Jakob Nowell in June 1995, Brad relapsed into his use. Brad and Troy were married on May 19, 1996 when their son was only 11 months old. Brad always showed a lot of pride and happiness for his son.

Bradley could be seen sharing the stage with Gwen Stefani and his band No Doubt as well as mutual collaborations; Gwen worked on the song “Saw Red” from the album “Robbin ‘the Hood”, while Brad appears in the song “Total Hate ’95” from the album “Beacon Street Collection”.

The cover of the self-titled album “Sublime” from 1996, is a tattoo of the name of the band on Bradley’s back.
