Brad Barron Renfro (Knoxville, July 25, 1982 – Los Angeles, January 15, 2008) was an American actor and musician. He made his debut in 1994 in the movie The Client. He acted in 21 movies, some shorts and a television episode throughout his career. The last part of his career was overshadowed by substance abuse and other personal problems. He died on January 15, 2008 at 25 years of age due to an overdose of heroin.

Brad Renfro was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, the son of Angela and Mark Renfro, who worked in a factory.From the age of five, he was raised by his paternal grandmother, Joanne Barron Renfro (1931-2008), a secretary of a church.

Renfro was discovered when he was ten years old by Mali Finn, a casting director who worked for Joel Schumacher. His only previous experience was a collegiate anti-drug production. Chosen by Finn, Renfro acted with Susan Sarandon and Tommy Lee Jones in The Client, under the direction of Schumacher. The film was based on the novel by John Grisham and became one of the most acclaimed films of that year. In 1995 he won the “Young Star” award given by The Hollywood Reporter, and was placed by People magazine in the list of the 30 most influential under 30s (“Top 30 Under 30”). That same year, he acted as Huck Finn in the film Tom and Huck with Jonathan Taylor Thomas.

In 1996, he participated in Sleepers, based on the novel by Lorenzo Carcaterra. The film was directed by Barry Levinson and also featured the participation of Robert De Niro, Kevin Bacon, Dustin Hoffman and Brad Pitt.

In 1998, he starred opposite Ian McKellen in Apt Pupil, directed by Bryan Singer. Renfro starred in other films, including Ghost World and Bully in 2001 and in The Jacket in 2005. He also appeared in a chapter of Law & amp; Order: Criminal Intent and finished filming the movie The Informers, co-starring Mickey Rourke, Winona Ryder and Billy Bob Thornton.

Renfro was the cousin of Jesse Hasek, lead singer of the band 10 Years, and appeared in the first version of the videoclip of “Wasteland”. He had a son named Yamato Renfro (born in 2003), lives in Japan with his mother.

In 1998, he was charged with possession of cocaine and marijuana. In December 2005, he was arrested during a raid against drug traffickers and charged with possession of heroin. A photograph of him handcuffed appeared on the cover of the Los Angeles Times. Renfro admitted to a detective that he was using heroin and methadone. In court, he was found guilty of the charges, and sentenced to three years of rehabilitation. In 2006, he spent ten days in prison for driving under the influence of heroin. In June 2007, a judge discovered that he had not gone to rehabilitation. He was then sent to a detoxification center.

Renfro was found dead in his Los Angeles apartment on January 15, 2008. On February 8, it was determined that the death was caused by an accidental poisoning of heroin and morphine, and his body was returned to East Tennessee for his funeral and burial. He was buried on January 22, 2008, on a quiet hill in the Red House Cemetery, north of Knoxville, in the small town of Blaine, Tennessee. Less than two weeks later, his grandmother, Joanne Barron Renfro, who took care of him from the age of five and accompanied him in his first castings, died in his home at the age of 76 years of natural causes.
