Bobby Vinton’s Biography
Vinton is the only son of a locally popular orchestra conductor, Stan Vinton and Dorothy Studzinski Vinton. The family name was originally Vintula but his father changed it to Vinton’s. Vinton’s parents supported his son’s interest in music, giving him his daily allowance of 25 cents after practicing the clarinet. At age 16, Vinton formed his first band, which played in clubs throughout the Pittsburgh area. With the money he earned he helped finance his university education at Duquesne University, where he graduated with a degree in musical composition. During his stay in Duquesne he became an expert in all the instruments of the band: piano, clarinet, saxophone, trumpets, percussion and oboe. When Vinton became a professional musician, it was common for people to become confused between the father and son bands, since both were named Stanley. Vinton’s father suggested to his son to use his second name of Robert professionally to clear up the confusion.
The birthplace of Vinton, Canonsburg in Pennsylvania, is also the birthplace of Perry Como and Joey Powers (famous for “Midnight Mary” (1963-1964)). His hometown named two streets, Bobby Vinton Boulevard and the shorter adjoining Bobby Vinton Drive, in his honor. These streets were built in the late 1970s; Previous attempts to name a residential street were unsuccessful. Residents did not care that the singer always named Pittsburgh as his hometown in television interviews. Perry As always he named Canonsburg as his hometown and so hundreds of people changed their address when the city called a street in the far east like Perry Como. The authorities of the city of Canonsburg had plans to erect a statue in honor of him, but Vinton himself vetoed the idea, noting that the planned cost, US $ 100,000, could be devoted to the city’s most important needs.
