Blackie Lawless’s Biography

Beginnings

Duren grew up in Staten Island, New York, had a fundamentalist education, but has also claimed to have Jewish ancestry, saying that during his youth he attended church. Lawless has Irish, French and indigenous ancestry from his mother, and is the nephew of baseball player Ryne Duren, who claims that his older brother instilled in him a taste for guitar.

Musical career

He began his musical career in groups of little renown as Black Rabbit and Orfax Rainbow. In 1975, after the departure of guitarist Johnny Thunders from the New York Dolls group in the middle of a tour of Florida, the band began to audition new guitarists. Lawless was hired but left the lineup when the tour ended.

He later moved to California with bassist Arthur Kane and helped found the band Killer Kane. At that time, the artistic name of Duren was “Blackie Goozeman”, as it can be appreciated in the credits of the only EP published by Killer Kane. A year later Kane decided to return to New York and Lawless preferred to remain in Los Angeles. In 1976 he formed the group Sister with guitarist Randy Piper. Lawless began to devise some tricks he put into practice on stage, such as lighting his boots and eating live worms, and in 1978 bassist Nikki Sixx and guitarist Lizzie Gray entered the band. Sixx achieved international fame years later when founding the Mötley Crüe group. Guitarist Chris Holmes joined the band months later.

Lawless formed the band Circus Circus in 1979, again with Randy Piper in the lineup. In 1981, after the failure of Circus Circus, Lawless joined the band London, where he reunited with Lizzie Gray and Nikki Sixx. Along with the band he played some recitals and recorded two songs as a demo. In 1982 he left the guitar and started playing bass. Upon leaving London, he contacted Randy Piper again and formed the W.A.S.P. The lineup was completed with Chris Holmes as guitarist and Tony Richards on drums.

W.A.S.P.

Blackie Lawless live with W.A.S.P. in 2014.

In 1984 the band recorded their first album, titled W.A.S.P. Lawless continued to generate controversy with his daring staging. It provoked the public by throwing raw meat from the stage, drinking fake blood from a skull and wearing extremely exotic garments. After the release of their second album, titled The Last Command, the changes in the lineup began to be a constant. After the departure of guitarist Chris Holmes, Lawless began working on a solo project, which due to pressures from the label ended up being an album by W.A.S.P. The album was titled The Crimson Idol, a production that was praised by the specialized critics. In this album, Blackie abandoned the sexual and provocative themes that abounded in the first productions of the band to write songs with more emotional background, based on their experiences. when he was an amateur musician and when he could finally find fame and recognition.

By the end of the 1990s, Lawless had recorded eight studio albums with W.A.S.P., being the only original musician left in the lineup. In the new millennium he continued touring with the group and recording some albums similar to The Crimson Idol as Unholy Terror (2001), Dying for the World (2002) and The Neon God (2004). To date, Blackie has recorded with W.A.S.P. fifteen studio albums and three live albums, remaining as the only original member of the group and as the main composer.
