Raised by his mother, Victoria Watson Shaver, since his father Virgilio left the family before his birth, he spent much of his time with his grandmother in Corsicana (Texas) until he was 12 years old, so that his mother could work in Waco in a nightclub, where sometimes he accompanied her. There he discovered country music.

His mother recovers him and he loses his grandmother. He left school after the eighth grade to help his aunt and uncle in picking cotton, but comes back sometimes, just to play sports.

At the age of 17, he joined the US Navy, but he did not stay and started various jobs such as cow-boy in the rodeos. At this time, he met and married Brenda Joyce Tindell, who has a son, Eddy Shaver. The couple divorced, but they remarried after some time.

In 2002 he is awarded at the American Music Honors & amp; Awards, the flagship event of the Americana Music Association, with its first award for a life as a composer.

Participates in November 2005 at the CMT Outlaws and in 2006, enters the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame.
