William Gaither Crudup (Manhasset, New York, July 8, 1968) is an American actor. He won a Tony Award for best supporting actor in a play for his participation in The Coast of Utopia.

Billy Crudup’s Biography

Crudup was born in Manhasset, New York, the grandson of Billy Gaither, a well-known Florida lawyer. Her parents divorced as a child, and they remarried later, before divorcing for the second time Crudup has two brothers: Tommy, executive producer, and Brooks, also a producer. He moved from New York with his family, at the age of eight; later he lived in Texas and then in Florida. In 1986 he graduated from Saint Thomas Aquinas High School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Crudup studied at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he received a diploma. After this he continued with his acting career and joined the theater company Lab! Theater. He was a member of the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity. He later studied at the Tisch School of the Arts at the University of New York, where he obtained a master of fine arts in 1994. He had his Broadway debut at Lincoln Center with the production of Tom Stoppard, Arcadia.

During his beginnings in the film career he starred in the films Sleepers (1996) and Inventing the Abbotts (1997). His first role in an animated film was in The Mononoke Princess of 1999, where he made Ashitaka’s voice in English. He then played Russell Hammond, the guitarist in the Cameron Crowe film, Almost Famous (2000). He was also the voice in Mastercard commercials “priceless” since 1997. In the movie The Good Shepherd of 2006 he plays the British spy Arch Cummings.

Crudup received a Tony Award nomination for his performance in The Elephant Man and another for his role in The Pillowman (2005), where Jeff Goldblum also acted. Between October of 2006 and May of 2007 participated in the two parts of The Coast of Utopia, produced by Tom Stoppard in Lincoln Center; in the play he played the literary critic Vissarion Belinsky, a performance that was nominated and finally awarded Tony.

In 2009 he appeared in the film based on the comic Watchmen, which was directed by Zack Snyder. In it he plays the superhero Dr. Manhattan.

Personal life

Crudup was a couple of Mary-Louise Parker between 1996 and November 2003. Both had a son, William Atticus Parker, who was born on January 7, 2004. In 2004, Crudup confirmed the romances that related him to the actress Claire Danes, with whom she also starred in Stage Beauty. The couple split up in December 2006 after Danes was seen with Evening actor Hugh Dancy.
