Billie Jean King Short Bio

Billie Jean Moffitt King (Long Beach, California November 22, 1943) is a former tennis player from the United States. She is considered one of the greatest players in tennis and one of the best athletes in history. King published a book called The War of the Sexes. One of his best victories was when he won Bobby Riggs, the world’s No. 1 male champion for the years 1941, 1946 and 1947., who challenged her to demonstrate “the superiority of man over woman”; King’s victory was a hit on the table in the claim of sporting equality between men and women (when this duel took place, in 1973, she was 30 years old and 55).

North American champion tennis champion and activist for social change, in 1973 threatened to boycott the United States Tennis Open unless women received a cash prize equal to that of men. Their demand was met and the United States Open became the first major tournament of its kind to offer equal pay.

Obama stressed that this athlete has contributed to gender equality not only in sport, but in all areas of public life. King became one of the first and most important female sports figures in the United States. After her professional tennis career, when she co-founded and directed the World Team Tennis League, King became the first commissioner of women in professional sports.

She is the winner of 39 Grand Slam titles: 12 singles, 16 in women’s doubles and 11 in mixed doubles.
