Bill Bright’s Biography
Born into an Oklahoma family, he described himself as “happy pagan” during his youth. He graduated in economics from Northeastern State University in Oklahoma. When he was around twenty years old he moved to Los Angeles (California) where he founded a company called Bright’s California Confections.
In 1944, while attending the First Presbyterian Church in Hollywood, Bright converted to Christianity. He then began intensive Bible studies that led him to graduate from Princeton and Fuller Theological Seminars.
While studying at Fuller he felt what he considered God’s call to fulfill the “great commission” by sharing his faith with the students of the University of California, an initiative that gave rise to the Campus Crusade for Christ movement (Student and Professional Crusade for Christ). During the following decades, Bright and his wife Vonette continued to work in the ministry and it expanded worldwide. In 2010, the Campus Crusade for Christ organization had more than 27,000 people working full time and more than 225,000 volunteers in 190 countries.
Bright earned five doctorates: a Ph.D. in Law from Jeonbug National University in Korea, a Ph.D. in Theology from John Brown University, a PhD in Letters from Houghton Seminary, a Ph.D. in Theology from Los Angeles Bible College and Seminary and a doctorate in Law from Pepperdine University.
In 1983, Bill Bright chaired the national committee for the National Year of the Bible in the United States. In 1996 he received the Templeton Prize for Progress in Religion of $ 1.1 million and donated the money to causes that promoted the spiritual benefits of fasting and prayer. Bright also wrote more than 100 books, and numerous articles and brochures that have been translated into various languages.
Bright was co-founder of the Alliance Defense Fund that funds high-level litigation in defense of the rights of Christians guaranteed by the First Amendment to the United States Constitution.
He was one of the evangelical ministers who in 2002 signed the document called Land Letter, which provided a theological foundation in support of US President George W. Bush’s initiative to invade Iraq, which took shape the following year. < /p>
