Bernhard Langer Short Bio

Bernhard Langer (Anhausen (near Augsburg), Germany, August 27, 1957) is a professional golfer. In 2002 he was named to the World Golf Hall of Fame.

Very precocious player, being still amateur already in 1974 he won his first professional tournament, the German National Open Championship. Converted into a professional in 1976, he won again in 1977 and 1979, thirteen times in total. He began his career in the European circuit in 1976, winning for the first time in a European competition in 1980. Along with Severiano Ballesteros holds the record of having achieved a victory for at least 17 consecutive years. The zenith of his career reached him by winning twice in the Masters of 1985 and 1993.

He is also famous for his participation in the Ryder Cup with the European team. Belongs to the golden generation of Europe that got the first victory in the Ryder Cup in 1985 along with Severiano Ballesteros, Nick Faldo or Ian Woosnam. He is one of the most prolific players, having participated in ten editions as a player, scoring 24 points in 42 games, which places him second in the European history behind Faldo. One of the best-known episodes is his 1991 duel with Hale Irvin on Kiawah Island, where he failed a 1.5m putt for the win, which tied him and gave up half a point. This allowed the US recover the cup after three unsuccessful campaigns. In 2004 he was the captain of the team that won the Ryder Cup in the USA. by 18.5 against 9.5 points.

Throughout his career, Langer has fought the “yips”, a term used to refer to nervous reactions of the hands during the putt stroke. He changed the grip of his putter on numerous occasions to try to solve the problem; When he was in the most successful moment of his career, it was when he most accused the problem.
