Benjamin Gibbard

Benjamin Gibbard (August 11, 1976, Bremerton, Washington), is an American musician, composer and guitarist. He studied engineering at Western Washington University. Known for being the vocalist of the indie bands Death Cab for Cutie and ex-vocalist of the now defunct The Postal Service, he released his first solo album, Former Lives, in 2012. Between 1997 and 2002 Gibbard published several solo works under the name of All-Time Quarterback, his old project in parallel. He has made numerous collaborations, playing bass and drums for other artists such as Harvey Danger and Jenny Lewis. His songs I Will Follow You Into The Dark and Meet Me On the Equinox are part of the soundtracks of the films Friends With Benefits and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, respectively. Along with other tracks, they also appear frequently in American television series.

After serious problems with alcohol, Gibbard resigned publicly and completely to him in 2008. In December of that same year, he engaged with the actress and singer Zooey Deschanel. The couple married in September 2009 near Seattle, Washington, without any image of the link being captured. The marriage attracted media attention from the start, although both were always extremely discreet. On November 1, 2011, they announced their separation, and Deschanel filed for divorce on December 27, citing irreconcilable differences and ensuring a “friendly separation.” The private bank accounts of the actress were made public due to an error in the documents presented in the Los Angeles courts. This caused a delay in the process, which ended very publicly in December 2012.

During his marriage, Gibbard had his wife’s participation in Something’s Rattling, one of the songs on his solo album. Several of the artist’s compositions are dedicated to his wife, including Lily, Monday Mornings, or Bigger than Love. The acclaimed Broken Yolk in Western Sky was composed during the divorce process, although Gibbard often avoids commenting on the latter.

Gibbard is a convinced agnostic, and declares Pescetarian.
