Ben Kingsley’s Biography

First years

Ben Kingsley was born with the name of Krishna Bhanji in Scarborough, Yorkshire, and grew up in Pendlebury, Salford, where he studied at Pendleton College, which is now the Ben Kingsley Theater. His father, Harji Bhanji, was a doctor of Muslim origin from the Gujarati people, and his mother, Anna Lyna Mary, was a model and actress of Jewish descent.

Kingsley started his career at Manchester Grammar School with Robert Powell. Although he was tempted by the cinema, he started in the theatrical world as the role of Fly from the adaptation that Peter Hall made in 1977 of the work of Ben Jonson Volpone for the Royal National Theater. This interpretation caused that Kingsley began to have a name within the British interpretation, emphasizing by its subtle style of interpretation in numerous productions of shakesperianas theater. With the same director, a year later, he participated in the assembly of Chekhov’s Garden of Cherry Trees, also in London.

Film career

Kingsley’s first appearance was a small role in Fear is the Key (1972). From here, he left the world of cinema until Richard Attenborough chose him to play the role of Mahatma Gandhi in the film Gandhi, an interpretation that would earn him the Oscar for Best Actor in 1982.

As of that moment, Kingsley fell for the offers and the British actor chose among the most unlikely roles. His records range from Lenin’s Train, Maurice, Bugsy, The Sneakers, In Search of Bobby Fischer, Schindler’s List, Death and the Maiden.

The most remembered and representative performances of his talent other than Gandhi are like Jewish accountant Itzhak Stern in Schindler’s List and that of an Iranian excoronel Massoud Amir Behrani in the thriller House of Sand and Fog with Jennifer Connelly .

He is also known for playing Moisés, in the film of the same name, from the The Bible collection, which he also participated in in the film Joseph, playing the same role as the Egyptian master of José, Putifar.

In general, Kingsley’s solid characterizations are of characters that have a rigid value structure, versus a situation that develops in defiance of the integrity of their character. In 2000, Kingsley received the title of Sir of the Order of the British Empire.

In 2013, he participated with Robert Downey Jr. in the Iron Man saga, playing the villain “El Mandarín”.
