John Hendley Barnhart (October 4, 1871 Brooklyn, New York-1949) was an American botanist.
In 1896 he graduated from Columbia University. From 1908 to 1926, and again in 1932 he was vice president of the library of the New York Botanical Garden. In 1907 he was a librarian at the same institution, when Anna Murray Vail, her first librarian, retired.
After marrying and moving to Jessamine, Florida, United States, he made extensive collections of the flora of the place. In 1914 he moved to Tarrytown and then to the Bronx. In 1903 he was assistant to the staf of the Botanical Garden of New York, with responsibilities on the publication of his newsletter, the memoirs and the scientific journal that institution published. In 1905 Flora of North America began to appear and Barnhart was responsible for revising the manuscripts.
The so-called “Barnhart bibliographic archive” consisted of some 50,000 cards with profuse bibliographic information. The New York Botanical Garden has expanded it considerably, continuing the work of Barnhart and it is microfilmed, with copies available to interested parties.
