Ayaan Hirsi Ali’s Biography
Hirsi Ali was born in Somalia in an Islamic family of the Daro tribe. His father, Hirsi Magan Isse, had five children and a daughter with four women and was an opponent of the Somali dictator Mohamed Siad Barre. Although her father, who studied in Italy and the United States, was opposed to ablation, her grandmother performed the removal of her clitoris when she was 5 years old while her father was abroad.
Following the civil war in Somalia, in which his father was involved, his family was forced to leave the country. First they fled to Saudi Arabia and later to Ethiopia and finally arrived in Kenya. In Kenya, she studied in an English language school, the Nairobi Institute of Muslim Youth, where she was greatly influenced by her teacher, Aziza, an Islamic fundamentalist. During the war between the Republics of Iraq and Iran, she was a follower of the Muslim Brotherhood, dressed according to the codes of the hijab and wished to become a martyr of Islam.
In 1992, Hirsi Ali’s father arranged a marriage with a distant cousin who resided in Canada, whom she had never met. He should have traveled to Canada with family help in Düsseldorf and Berlin, but when he arrived in Germany he decided to take the train to Holland instead of flying to Canada.
When he arrived in the Netherlands, he applied for political asylum and obtained a residence permit for humanitarian reasons, although having arrived in Germany he would have to apply for asylum in the German country. To avoid being located when registering, he gave another name and another date of birth. Since then he would use the surname Hirsi Ali instead of Hirsi Magan.
When he received the asylum permit he had several short jobs, from cleaning to mail sorting. In that period he took Dutch classes and a social work course. After that, she continued studying Political Science at the University of Leiden until the year 2000. Between 1995 and 2001 she worked as an independent interpreter and translator, mainly for the national immigration service and also as a social worker for battered women’s shelters. Thanks to these works he got to know the functioning of the Dutch immigration system. He was very critical of the ways in which the system treated asylum seekers, which favored educated applicants over the less educated. Hirsi Ali speaks 6 languages: English, Somali, Arabic, Swahili, Amharic and Dutch.
After obtaining a master’s degree in Political Science, Hirsi Ali became a member of the Wiardi Beckman Foundation, a scientific institute linked to the Labor Party (PvdA, of social democratic tendency). Inspired by the atheistic Manifesto of Herman Philipse, philosopher of Leiden, Hirsi Ali abandoned Islam. During this period he began his critique of Islamic culture, which he captured in the book De Zoontjesfabriek. He made an appearance on television – which caused a sensation for his eloquence and firmness – in which he described Islam as “retrograde.” He then began to receive the first death threats. He hid and fled to USA & nbsp; U.
After some disagreements with the PvdA, particularly the immigration policies of his party, based on the idea of multiculturalism, in November 2002 Ayaan Hirsi Ali left the Dutch Social Democratic Party. She explained that, in her opinion, the multiculturalist policy “maintains the rules that have subjugated women inimigrants, and prevent their true emancipation.” He began his rapprochement with the Popular Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD), the liberal party of the right, and during his exile he collaborated with that party as an assistant, between November 2002 and January 2003. After his return to the Netherlands to the elections with the VVD and was elected deputy in January 2003.
From January 2003 to June 2006 she has been a parliamentarian. He left his seat when the immigration minister, Rita Verdonk, announced that the Dutch nationality of Hirsi Ali was not valid, after she declared Ayaan herself in several interviews that she had requested asylum with a false name and date of birth. However, because of the outrage that the case sparked even at the international level and the pressures of her own government, Minister Verdonk was forced to declare that Hirsi Ali would remain Dutch or, in any case, be granted nationality.
For his part, Hirsi Ali said he was happy about the rectification of the minister and the Government itself, although he does not intend to return to Parliament. He would keep his plans to move to the United States, by accepting the offer of the American Enterprise Institute, a conservative think tank.
