Augusto Pinochet Short Bio
Augusto Jose Ramon Pinochet Ugarte (Valparaiso, November 25, 1915-Santiago, December 10, 2006) was a Chilean military and politician, who led the military dictatorship of Chile that took place between 1973 and 1990, period known in that country as Military Regime.
He was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Chilean Army on August 23, 1973, by President Salvador Allende, replacing the resigned General Carlos Prats. On September 11 of the same year he led, in the midst of a political, economic and social crisis, a coup d’état that overthrew the left government of the Popular Unity, ending the period of the Presidential Republic. he ruled the country, first as president of the Military Government Junta, to which the title of supreme head of the nation was added on June 27, 1974, which conferred on him the executive power.
On December 16 of that year Pinochet took office as president of the Republic, a post that would be ratified after a questioned plebiscite and the promulgation of a new Constitution in 1980. His term ended in a democratic way through another plebiscite in 1988 , after which he was replaced – after presidential and parliamentary elections – by Patricio Aylwin on March 11, 1990. Pinochet remained commander-in-chief of the Army until March 10, 1998 and the next day he became Senator for life, Position that he exercised effectively for a couple of months.
Its mandate has numerous followers of the political right, which highlight the establishment in Chile during the Military Regime of a free market economy, integrated into the world economy and with a strong presence of the private sector. This change in the economic model led to accelerated macroeconomic growth, which placed Chile as one of the countries with the greatest economic boom and the highest rates of human development in Latin America, and on the other hand, this model also deepened the concentration of wealth and increased the country’s socioeconomic inequalities.
During the dictatorship, serious and diverse violations of human rights were committed, which is why it has been criticized both in its country and in the rest of the world. Pinochet had to face several judicial processes, some of which were dismissed in life for various reasons, while others were because of his death before a final decision was issued.
