Audrey Azoulay (Paris, August 4, 1972) is a senior French official and politician. She was cultural adviser to President François Hollande (2014-2016) and Minister of Culture and Communication in the government of Manuel Valls from February 2016 to May 2017. On November 10, she was elected General Director of Unesco for a term of four years. He assumed the mandate on November 15.
He was born in Paris to a Moroccan Jewish family originally from Essaouira. She is the daughter of politician, banker and journalist André Azoulay, adviser to the King of Morocco Hassan II and later to Mohammed VI, and writer Katia Brami. He grew up in the Parisian neighborhood of Beaugrenelle with his two sisters.
He obtained his undergraduate degree in administration from the Paris-Dauphine University in 1994, after which he obtained a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Lancaster in the United Kingdom. He graduated from the Institute of Political Sciences in Paris until he arrived at the National School of Administration, where many of the top officials of the French administration leave.
During his years of study he worked in the banking sector where his father was a senior manager of Banco Paribas. She described the experience as “frightful”, however it helped her to start her professional career at the French National Film Center in 2006, first as deputy director of audiovisual, in 2007 she assumed the financial and legal direction and in 2011 the delegated general direction , defending, according to the President of the Center Frédérique Bredin, “tirelessly French cultural and cinematographic exceptionalism against the American power”.
In 2014, she was appointed Minister of Culture of President François Hollande and two years later, on February 12, 2016 Minister of Culture of France replacing Fleur Pellerin in the government of Manuel Valls. He left office in May 2017 with the victory in the presidential elections in France of Enmanuel Macron and devoted himself to preparing his candidacy for the direction of Unesco presented on March 15.
After facing 8 candidates on October 13, 2017 Azoulay won the vote to replace the Bulgarian Irina Bokova made by the Unesco executive council by two votes (30-28) to her rival, the Qatari Hamad ben Abdelaziz al Kaouari.
