Audra Lindley’s Biography

Her full name was Audra Marie Lindley , and she was born in Los Angeles, California, to a family dedicated to the world of entertainment. She began in Hollywood as a stand-in actress, eventually progressing to work as a double action scene. When she was in her twenties, she decided to move to New York to work in the theater. Among the many works in which he participated in Broadway are On Golden Pond, Playhouse 90, Long Day’s Journey into Night, and Horse Heavens.

At that time he left for a time his artistic activity in order to marry Hardy Ulm in 1943, and with whom he had five children. The couple divorced in 1960. After resuming her career, she began to work constantly on television, highlighting her role as Sue Knowles in the CBS series Search For Tomorrow, as well as a period of six years as the manipulator “Aunt Liz “Matthews in the production of NBC Another World. She also worked regularly as the mother of Meredith Baxter in the sitcom Bridget Loves Bernie, and as Lee Grant’s best friend in Fay.

His greatest fame came with the interpretation of Helen Roper in the sitcom Three’s Company (1977). The character and her husband, Mr. Roper (played by Norman Fell), were the subject of a derivative series, The Ropers (1979), which was unsuccessful. Lindley continued working in the television and the cinema, in productions like Revenge of the Stepford Wives (1980), “Cannery Row (1982), and Desert Hearts (Half hour more with you) (1985).

Lindley continued to play roles of all types of different television productions, including that of Phoebe Buffay’s grandmother in Friends, and the last of all, that of Cybill Shepherd’s mother on the CBS Cybill sitcom. Interestingly, she had also acted as Shepherd’s mother in the 1972 film The Heartbreak Kid.

Lindley married a second time, with the actor James Whitmore in 1972, the couple remained together until 1979, the year in which they divorced.

Audra Lindley died of a leukemia in Los Angeles, California, in 1997. She was buried in the Woodlawn Memorial Cemetery in Santa Monica, California.
