A native of Gravelly, Arkansas, Hunnicutt studied at the Arkansas State Teachers College, a college he left prematurely to find work. He moved to Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts where he joined a theater company before traveling to New York where he quickly landed his first Broadway roles, debuting with the play Love’s Old Sweet Song (1939). Little by little, he was classified in roles of field man and usually in characters that were older than him.
Hunnicutt appeared in numerous films in the 1940s before returning to the theaters. In 1949 he moved to Hollywood and focused on his film career. He participated in films such as The Red Badge of Courage (1951), The Lusty Men (1952), The Last Command (1955) (as Davy Crockett), The Tall T (1957) and El Dorado (1966). In 1952, he won an Oscar nomination for his role in Howard Hawks’ feature film “The Big Sky.”
In the remaining decades, he appeared in more than 40 television series such as Bonanza, Gunsmoke, The Rifleman and The Twilight Zone.
In his last years, Hunnicutt was the honorary mayor of Northridge, California.
He died in 1979 because of cancer of the tongue and is buried at Coop Prairie Cemetery in Mansfield, Arkansas.
