Arthur Hohl (May 21, 1889 – March 10, 1964) was a theater and film actor of American nationality.

Arthur Hohl’s Biography

Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he began acting in the cinema in the early 1920s. He played, in roles of short duration, a large number of evil characters and thieves, but also embodied a few compassionate character. Throughout his career between 1924 and 1949 totaled a hundred of cinematographic performances.

His two best-known roles today are the ones he did as Pete, along with Helen Morgan and Donald Cook, on Show Boat (1936), and that of Mr. Montgomery on Island of Lost Souls (1932), working with Richard Arlen and Leila Hyams.

Other outstanding roles were the following: the one of Brutus, in front of Warren William like Julio César, in the film of Cecil B. DeMille Cleopatra (1934), carried out by Claudette Colbert; Olivier Le Daim in The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1939); the real estate agent in the Charles Chaplin film Monsieur Verdoux (1947); Journet, a tavern keeper, in the Basil Rathbone film about Sherlock Holmes The Scarlet Claw (1944); and the Christian Titus in Cecil B. DeMille’s film The Sign of the Cross (1932).

In his theatrical side, Hohl acted on the Broadway circuit, working on works by authors such as William Shakespeare, George Bernard Shaw and Henrik Ibsen, among others. His theatrical roles were of much greater importance than his cinematic characters, an example being his performance as Andrew Aguecheek in a performance carried out in 1930 Night of Kings.In total, Arthur Hohl acted in nineteen plays between 1914 and 1932.

Arthur Hohl passed away in Los Angeles, California, in 1964.
