Arditi was the name adopted by the elite stormtroopers of Regio Esercito in the First World War. Its name is derived from the Italian verb ardire (osar), translating itself as “Los Osados”.
The Reparti d’assalto (Assault Units) were formed in the summer of 1917 by Colonel Bassi, being assigned to the tactical role of shock troops, breaking enemy defenses in order to open the way to a broad advance of the infantry. The Arditi were not units that were part of the infantry divisions, but were considered as separate branches.
The Reparti d’Assalto were successful in offering some degree of movement in what had previously been a trench war. His actions on the battlefield were exemplary and earned a well-deserved place in the military history of Italy. They were demobilized in 1920.
The name Arditi was later used in 1919-1920 by the Italian occupiers of Fiume who were under the command of Gabriele D’Annunzio, most of them being former soldiers of Regio Esercito. They wore a uniform with black shirts and a black fez, which was later adopted by the Black Shirts of Benito Mussolini.
Since October 1, 1975, the flag of the X Arditi Regiment (formed in 1942 in imitation of the Ninth Assault Unit of the First World War) was adopted by the 9th Regiment of Assalto Paracadutisti Col Moschin. Until now the members of the Col Moschin and the Italian military divers are known as “Arditi Incursori”, being seen as the heirs of the Arditi of the First World War.
