Arcangelo Corelli (Fusignano, February 17, 1653-Rome, January 8, 1713) was a violinist and composer of the Italian Baroque period.
He was born in Fusignano (province of Ravenna, Italy) on February 17, 1653. He was the son of one of the most important families in this city. From childhood he studied violin in his hometown. In 1666 he traveled to Bologna, where he studied with Giovanni Benvenuti and Leonardo Brugnoli. In 1670 he became a member of the Bologna Philharmonic Academy. Five years later he settled in Rome, where he was adopted and housed by Cardinal Pietro Ottoboni, nephew of Pope Alexander VIII. In Rome he would achieve an extraordinary fame as a violinist, at the same time that he perfected his compositional technique. It was protected by Queen Christina of Sweden.
In 1682 he became the first violinist of the chapel orchestra of the church of San Luis de los Franceses, the national church of the French community in Rome. In 1684 he entered the Congregazione dei Virtuosi di Santa Cecilia, the same year he adopted the name Arcomelo Erimanteo. By 1700, Corelli was already the first violinist and concert director of the Palace of the Chancellery. His fame was such that in 1706 he entered the Academy of Arcadia, a very high distinction at that time, where he met Domenico Scarlatti. Two years later he will meet Händel. He died in Rome on January 8, 1713, being buried in the pantheon of the church of Santa Maria ad martires (the Pantheon in Rome).
Corelli is considered one of the greatest precursors of the pre-classical sonata and the representative par excellence of the concerto grosso, a technique he acquired due to the innovations of contemporary composer Alessandro Stradella and which he used for his (Concerto Grosso Op. 6) . The music of Corelli exerted a great influence on the German composers, especially on Bach and Händel. After those of Franz Joseph Haydn, Corelli’s works were the most published and reedited of his time.
