Born in Vienna, of Hungarian and Czech origins, since childhood he showed a remarkable predisposition for music. Although he was fascinated mostly by the organ, due to the financial circumstances of the family he managed to receive zither lessons. Anton, who grew up in the Brigittenau district of Vienna, was 12 years old when he found a zither in the attic of his grandmother’s house. He continued with his studies until 1928.
He married in 1930 and three months later his first daughter was born. From 1939 to 1945, that is, during the same years of World War II, he was enlisted in the German Wehrmacht, anti-aircraft system section, and was sent to the Russian front.
The third man
In 1948 Carol Reed was preparing the filming of her film in Vienna when she found Karas playing in a Viennese tavern. He approached him and hired him to compose the soundtrack of his film. The meeting was held by chance in that place, and the election turned out to be a stroke of luck for both.
Shortly before finishing the film, Carol Reed installed Anton Karas at the Astoria Hotel in Vienna, where he was asked to record for the team for several hours. Back in London, Reed tried to fit the music into the film he had just filmed, but, as it was not satisfactory, he invited Karas to record in London. Karas began composing on June 1, 1949, and for 12 weeks (14 hours a day) he kept trying again and again, and practically remained as “prisoner” of Reed in London. After the recording, a fire burned, in the editing room, more than half of Karas’s material, so Karas had to start all the work again. Once Carol Reed’s film was finished, Karas went to Westminster Abbey to light a candle, in gratitude.
The single released by Karas from the melody soundtrack, “The Harry Lime Theme”, remained on the charts in the Top 40 in the United States for more than three months in 1950. The single was followed for an LP of his pieces and other songs published by Viennese Decca. Karas used the profits from the film and records to buy a heuriger (a peculiar Austrian tavern) which he called “The Third Man” in the Viennese district of Grinzing. He continued playing at his club and later released other records for the Austrian and German markets.
