Anna Marie Hahn (July 7, 1906 – December 7, 1938) was a German-American serial killer. She was the first woman to be executed in the electric chair in the state of Ohio.
Anna Marie Hahn’s Biography
She was the youngest of twelve children, and still a teenager, had an affair with a doctor in Vienna, although it was alleged that no records of a Viennese doctor were found, with the name the girl gave her.
They had a son and when that son was born, he was called Oskar (also spelled “Oscar”). The family, scandalized, sent the girl to America in 1929, while the son remained in Bavaria with the grandparents. When the young woman settled with her relatives Max and Anna Doeschel in Cincinnati, Ohio, the newcomer met the German immigrant Philip Hahn, whom she married in 1930. Anna Marie and her husband briefly returned to Germany to look for Oscar and, then, the trio defined his life as that of a well-constituted family.
Hahn allegedly started poisoning and robbing aging men and women from the German community in Cincinnati, in order to develop the vice of the game. Ernst Kohler, who died on May 6, 1933, was probably his first victim. Anna Marie Hahn had made friends with the old man shortly before his death, who by his will left him his house.
His next alleged victim, Albert Parker, 72, also died shortly after the woman began taking care of him. Before dying, the man signed an IOU (of the English “I owe you”, an informal contract of debt used in the English-speaking countries) for $ 1000 dollars, sum that supposedly had received as a loan, but after the death of man, the document must have been discarded, or simply “disappeared”.
Jacob Wagner, aged 78, died on June 3, 1937, leaving $ 17,000 in cash to his “beloved niece” Hahn. Then the woman began caring for a 67-year-old man named George Gsellman, also from Cincinnati, and for his service before his death on July 6, 1937, the woman received $ 15,000.
Georg Obendoerfer was the last to die, on August 1, 1937, after traveling to Colorado Springs, Colorado, along with Anna Marie Hahn and his son, police said that Obendoerfer, a shoemaker, “died quickly. in agony, although when asked, Mrs. Hahn said she did not know the man. ” But his son testified during an interrogation, that the man, his mother, and himself, were traveling together to Colorado from Cincinnati, and that during the trip, Obendoerfer began to feel sick.
The autopsy revealed high levels of arsenic in the body of Obendoerfer, which increased the suspicions of the police. Subsequent exhumations of the bodies of their former employers, showed that all of them had been poisoned.
Hahn was convicted after a sensationalist four-week trial in November 1937, and was sentenced in Ohio to die in the electric chair, thus being the first woman executed in that state, which occurred on December 7. of 1938. She was buried in the ‘Mount Calvary Cemetery’, in Columbus.
