Andy Rooney’s Biography
Rooney was born under the name of Andrew Aitken Rooney in Albany New York, son of Ellinor (Reynolds) Rooney (1886-1980). He attended the Albany Academy, and subsequently attended Colgate University in Hamilton in downtown New York, where he was initiated into the Sigma Chi fraternity, before being enlisted in the United States Navy in August 1941
He began his career in a newspaper while in the Navy when, in 1942, he began writing for the newspaper Stars and Stripes in London during World War II.
For his service as a war correspondent in combat zones during the war, Rooney was awarded the Bronze Star Medal and an Air Medal.
In 1995 he wrote his memoirs, Mi Guerra, with his reports of his war chronicles. In addition to recounting at first hand several historical events and people (including the entrance to Paris and the Nazi concentration camps), Rooney describes how this marked his experience as a writer and as a reporter.
