Born in Blairgowrie, Perthshire (Scotland), Clyde hit the mark with the characterization of an “old man” in his comedy shorts, which were immediately successful. With a gray wig and a mustache filmed his career in the short film, and this disguise lasted so long that it evolved with him. Clyde’s long series of comedies with Columbia Pictures began in 1934 and continued until 1956. He was the comedian on the payroll of the Columbia that lasted longer, except for The Three Stooges.

Andy Clyde was also a character actor in the movies; for example, he portrayed a sad provincial postman in Katharine Hepburn’s film The Little Minister (Gypsy Blood) and Charles Coburn’s drunken companion in The Green Years. In the forties he was intervening more and more in the genre of adventures and in the western. Clyde is well remembered for his comedic role, usually with William Boyd in the Hopalong Cassidy film series, or with Whip Wilson in low-budget westerns from the Monogram company playing the role of “Winks.”

Clyde’s latest film premiered in commercial theaters in 1956. From then on he worked in television, in series such as Lassie (CBS) or The Real McCoys, on ABC. In the latter was the contrast to the legendary Walter Brennan, playing the friendly neighbor “George McMichael.” Popular actress Madge Blake acted as Clyde’s fictional sister, “Flora McMichael.” Clyde continued working on television until his death, at 75 years old. He was married to actress Elsie Tarron.

Clyde has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, at 6760 Hollywood Boulevard, for his filmmaking activity.

Andy Clyde died in 1967 in Los Angeles, California, from natural causes. He was buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Glendale, California.
