Andrew “Sandy” Irvine (April 8, 1902 – June 9, 1924) was a British mountaineer who took part in the “Third British Expedition” to Mount Everest in 1924. Irvine disappeared in June of that year somewhere in the “North Ridge” along with George Mallory, while trying to make the first ascent to the highest mountain on Earth. Even today there is still doubt about whether they managed to reach a summit. The couple was last seen a few hundred meters from the top.

Irvine was born in Birkenhead, England, in a family with English, Welsh and Scottish roots. He was educated in the schools of Birkenhead and Shrewsbury and, later, in Merton College, Oxford to study engineering. A good athlete, Irvine excelled in rowing and was the number 5 rower of the Oxford crew that won the Oxford-Cambridge Regatta of 1923, which was Oxford’s only victory between 1913 and 1937.

Andrew Irvine was kind, expressive, shy and creative. He was strong, tall, broad-shouldered and in very good shape. He had a natural capacity for engineering and to fix or improve any mechanical object. During the First World War, while still a scholar, he sent to the War Office a design for a mechanical switch that allowed a machine gun to be fired from an airplane through the propeller without damaging the blades.
