Andrew Stephen Grove (in Hungarian, Gróf András István, September 2, 1936-21 March 2016) was a Hungarian-American entrepreneur and scientist. He was one of the first employees of Intel Corporation and in recent times played key roles for its success.
Childhood and education
Grove was born to a middle-class Jewish family in Budapest, Hungary and died on March 21, 2016 for reasons that are still unclear. Growing up, he was known by his friends by the name of “Andris”. At the age of four, Andris was diagnosed with scarlet fever. The disease was almost deadly, and although he survived, he suffered significant hearing loss as a result. During the Hungarian revolution of 1956 he left his home and his family sheltered from the night and emigrated to the United States, arriving in New York in 1957. Grove and his wife Eva were married in 1958 and had two daughters.
Grove earned a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from the City College of New York in 1960, and a Ph.D. in chemical engineering from the University of California, Berkeley in 1963.
Grove worked at the Fairchild Semiconductor company before becoming the third employee of the nascent Intel Corporation. He became the president of Intel in 1979, the CEO in 1987, and the chairman of the board of directors and CEO in 1997.
Grove is credited with transforming Intel from a memory chip producer to one of the most dominant microprocessor manufacturers in the world. During his tenure as CEO, Grove posted a 994% increase in Intel’s market capitalization from 18,000,000,000 to 197,000,000,000 dollars, making it the most valuable company in the world at that time. position of executive director in May 1998 and remained chairman of the board until November 2004. Grove continues his work at Intel as a counselor.
Although Grove was certainly Intel’s third employee, it was actually given number four because of an administrative error. Leslie L. Vadász was hired by Andy Grove and she was given number three for that same mistake.
Robert Noyce and Gordon E. Moore were the co-founders of Intel, along with six others who had left Fairchild Semiconductor. Noyce claims to have been the catalyst for the group and some suggest that Intel’s relaxed culture was a contribution that Noyce had brought from Fairchild. On the other hand, Grove was extremely competitive and both he and the company were known by the slogan “Only the paranoids survive.” On the other hand, Noyce was anti-competitive by nature, even to the point that, as Tom Wolfe points out in “Hooking Up”, all the parking spaces were unassigned, so that the first one arrived was the first I could park. This difference in their work styles supposedly produced some degree of friction between Noyce and Grove.
