Andrey Sergueyevich Mikhalkov-Konchalovsky (Russian, Андрей Сергеевич Михалков-Кончаловский) (Moscow (Soviet Union), August 20, 1937) is a Russian film director.
Andréi Konchalovski is part of the aristocratic family Mikhalkov, renowned for his artistic and aristocratic roots. He changed his name to Andréi and took the surname of his maternal grandfather, Piotr Konchalovski, as a pseudonym. He is brother of Nikita Mijalkov and son of Sergei Mijalkov.
He studied for ten years at the Moscow Conservatory, preparing to be a pianist. However, in 1960, he met Andréi Tarkovski with whom he co-wrote the screenplay for his film Andréi Rubliov (1966).
His directorial debut, El primer maestro, was favorably received in the Soviet Union and he participated in several international film festivals. His second film, Istoriya Asi Klyáchkinoy, kotóraya lyubila, da ne vyshla zámuzh was censored by the Soviet authorities. When it was released, 20 years later, it was hailed as his masterpiece. Later, Konchalovski directed adaptations of Nest of hidalgos of Iván Turguénev and Tío Vania of Antón Chéjov. Both films were starred by Innokenti Smoktunovski. His epic film Siberiade was received positively at the Cannes International Film Festival and made it possible for him to move to the United States in 1980.
His most popular Hollywood productions are Runaway Train, based on an original screenplay by Akira Kurosawa, and Tango and Cash, starring Sylvester Stallone and Kurt Russell. During the 1990s, Konchalovski returned to Russia, although he occasionally produced historical films for American television, including the miniseries The Odyssey and the telefilm The Lion in Winter.
His 2003 film Dom Durakov, set in a psychiatric asylum in Chechnya, earned him a Silver Lion at the Venice International Film Festival.
Konchalovski has been married multiple times. His first wife was the Kazakh actress Natalia Arinbasárova, with whom he had two children: Yegor and Stepan. His second wife was Irina Kandat. The third was Viviane Godet, with whom she had a daughter: Alexandra Mijalkova.
His current wife is the Russian actress Yuliya Vysótskaya.
