Cooper was born on June 3, 1967 in New York City. He was the youngest son of writer Wyatt Emory Cooper and the artist, designer, writer and heiress Gloria Vanderbilt, granddaughter of Cornelius Vanderbilt II from the distinguished Vanderbilt family of New York. Their ancestry is mainly English, Scottish, Irish, Welsh, Dutch and Chilean.
From an early age he was exposed to the media and as a baby he was photographed by Diane Arbus for the fashion magazine Harper’s Bazaar. On September 17, 1970, at the age of three he was invited along with his mother to the television program The Tonight Show. During 1977 to 1980, he modeled at the Ford Models agency for fashion houses Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein and Macy’s.
His father suffered a series of heart attacks, and he died on January 5, 1978 at the age of 50, while undergoing open-heart surgery. This situation affected the young Cooper enormously and in retrospect he declared: “I thinkam very similar to my father in many ways, including that we are very similar physically and that we have a very similar sense of humor and we are passionate about telling stories.” He also considered that his father’s book entitled Families «[…] is a kind of guide on how he […] would have liked to live his life and the decisions he would have wanted me to make, andfeel very connected to him ».
After graduating from Dalton School at the age of 17, he traveled to southern Africa in an English army truck weighing thirteen tons, and during the voyage he contracted malaria, for which he was hospitalized in Kenya. Later, Cooper wrote about his experience, “Africa is a place to forget and be forgotten.”
Carter Vanderbilt Cooper, his older brother, committed suicide on July 22, 1988, at the age of 23, after he threw himself off the terrace of the fourteenth floor of the Vanderbilt family’s New York apartment. , Gloria Vanderbilt wrote about the death of her son in the book A Mother’s Story, where she stated that “[…] the suicide was caused by an episode of psychosis induced by an allergy to an asthma medication known as salbutamol.” Carter’s suicide was apparently the cause of Anderson’s decision to become a journalist.
«Suicide is such an odd, and so my brother’s death is still sort of a mystery, sobecame interested in the questions of survival: why do some people survive and others do not … Covering wars just seemed logical. »
“Suicide is like a strange kind of taboo, and my brother’s death is still a kind of mystery, sobecame interested in survival issues: why do some people survive and others do not … Being a correspondent war seems logical. “
On an Oprah Winfrey show, while promoting her book, Dispatches from the Edge: A Memoir of War, Disasters, and Survival, she indicated that she suffered from dyslexia as a child, and re-confirmed it in the program The Tonight Show directed by the also dyslexic Jay Leno, on August 1, 2007.
