Amartya Kumar Sen (in Bengali, অমর্ত্য কুমার সেন ; in Hindi, अमर्त्य कुमार सेन; translit .: Ômorto Kumar Shen) (born in Manikanj, Bangala (Raj) British), November 3, 1933) is an Indian philosopher and economist of Bengali ethnicity, awarded the Prize in Economic Sciences in memory of Alfred Nobel in 1998.

Amartya Sen’s Biography

Amartya Kumar Sen studied at Trinity College at the University of Cambridge, where he graduated in 1955 and received his doctorate in 1959. He has had successive university teaching positions throughout his working life: at the University of Calcutta (1956- 1958) as a professor of Economics; at the University of Delhi (1963-1971) as Professor of Economics; at Nuffield College (1977-1980) as Professor of Economics and at All Souls College (1980-1988) as “Drummond Professor” of Political Economy, both from the University of Oxford; at the London School of Political and Economic Sciences (1971-1977) as Professor of Economics; in the Trinity College of the University of Cambridge (1957-1963 and 1997-2004) as Professor of Economics; and at Harvard University as “Thomas W. Lamont University Professor” and professor of Economics and Philosophy (1987-1998 and since 2004).

Among the institutional positions he has held, he has been president of the International Economic Association (1986-1989), president of the American Economic Association (1994), president of the Indian Economic Association (1989), president of Development Studies Association (1980-1982), president of the Econometric Society (1984) and president of the Commonwealth Commission On Respect and Understanding (2007-2008).
